Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Poverty reduction programs are essential to improving the livelihoods of disadvantaged communities in Nigeria, and Kaltungo Local Government Area (LGA) in Gombe State is no exception. The successful implementation of these programs, however, is influenced by geopolitical alliances that shape the distribution of resources and the prioritization of projects. In Kaltungo, alliances between local, state, and federal governments, as well as interactions between ethnic and political groups, play a significant role in determining which communities benefit from poverty alleviation initiatives (Zahra & Yusuf, 2023).
Geopolitical alliances can either facilitate or obstruct the effective implementation of poverty reduction programs. In some cases, political favoritism and the alignment of certain ethnic or political groups can influence the allocation of resources, leaving marginalized communities without sufficient support. On the other hand, strategic alliances can strengthen the collaboration between different levels of government and improve the efficiency of poverty alleviation efforts (Aliyu & Sulaiman, 2024). This study aims to explore the role of these geopolitical alliances in the implementation of poverty reduction programs in Kaltungo LGA and assess their impact on the region’s poverty levels.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The implementation of poverty reduction programs in Kaltungo LGA faces challenges related to political and ethnic alliances, which influence the allocation of resources and the targeting of programs. This study seeks to investigate how these geopolitical alliances affect the effectiveness of poverty alleviation initiatives in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides insights into how political and ethnic alliances affect the success of poverty reduction programs in Kaltungo LGA. The findings will inform policy recommendations for improving the equity and effectiveness of poverty alleviation initiatives, ensuring that they reach the most vulnerable populations. The study also contributes to understanding the complex relationship between politics and development in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, and examines the impact of geopolitical alliances on poverty reduction programs. Limitations include difficulties in accessing detailed data due to political sensitivities and the complex nature of regional governance and program implementation.
